The World Health Organization has accepted “Zelestrocel” as the new name globally for Magellan Stem Cells’ donor osteoarthritis stem cell product.
The change has come about after Magellan made an international non-proprietary name application under the auspices of the WHO.
The new name is made up of the prefix “Zele” – which translates to “zeal” in English, referring to fervent devotion, dedication, or intense enthusiasm – and the suffix “strocel” (from stromal cell). So the product moves from being referred to as MAG200 to Zelestrocel.
Magellan Stem Cells CEO and CMO, Associate Professor Dr Julen Freitag said: “The registration of the Zelestrocel product name is strategically important as we continue progressing toward clinical commencement of our proprietary stem cell therapy.”
Dr Freitag added: “We are excited about the next 12 months as we move toward commencement of clinical studies utilising a scalable and commercially viable manufacturing process.”
